I believe that every woman deserves information and resources that will assist her to make informed decisions about her care during her pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
My interest in birth, doulas and midwifery started with the birth of my first child in 1990 and reading Ina May’s “Spiritual Midwifery”. When a friend invited me to be with her during her labor in 1991, my passion for birth knowledge grew and I started reading everything that was about birth and pregnancy. I became pregnant with my son in 2000, I chose to have a hospital birth with a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) but I delivered my son within 20 minutes of arriving at the hospital with an OB/GYN attending that I never saw before. December 2003 I was expecting my third child, this time I wanted a home water birth. I found a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) within an hour from my home and from then on we have been friends and she my mentor and guidance. My husband and I took her childbirth classes and I felt then the passion arising again in me to continue my journey. She encouraged me to pursue my certification to become a doula and I took the training in May 2004. September 2004, I found out I was expecting my fourth child, in June 2005 and that put my doula services on hold until 2006. The last two births have really made me grow as a professional and a mother. I continue to further my education as a professional and expanding my knowledge about doulas, pregnancy and birth support through books, workshops, classes, and conferences. I am an active member of the Lafayette Area Doulas Information & Educational Services support group, www.LafayetteDoulas.com and the Northern Indiana Consumer Rep for the Indiana Midwives Association, www.indianamidwivesassociation.com.
I look forward to being your doula and supporting you and your family during this exciting time in your life. My philosophy is that a woman should be able to birth her baby with support and encouragement in a place she feels safe. There is no right or wrong way to birth a child, but there are many ways to ensure that a woman, with her family, feels empowered and in control of what she is experiencing. I strive to support each woman to find her own unique pathway for birthing her baby and to maintain a calm, peaceful birth environment. Birth is an empowering positive experience for a laboring mom when she is surrounded with loving, gentle, encouraging support of another woman, her confidence in her ability to birth is increased and her birthing experience is enhanced.
I am a firm believer that every women should have a doula, so I encourage you to interview other doulas so you can hire the doula that is most compatible with you, your partner and your birth desires.
